Is OSFED A Real Eating Disorder?

In our appearance-crazed, weight-obsessed, perfection-focused world, eating disorders are become more and more common. Humans are social creatures and we are not immune to social pressure, especially if we are already struggling with anxiety or depression.

Sometimes an eating disorder doesn’t fit into the clearly defined characteristics of other, labeled eating disorders, such as bulimia or anorexia nervosa. However, a person may still be suffering from significantly disordered eating that negatively affects their mood, ability to function, relationships, and health.

In this case, a person may be diagnosed with OSFED - Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder.

Have you been given this eating disorder diagnosis? There are many feelings that can come along with a diagnosis of an eating disorder. But what if your particular eating disorder doesn’t fit into the clearly-defined boundaries of the most common eating disorders? Does that mean your eating disorder is less legitimate somehow? Or that it’s ‘not really as real as the others’?

Not at all! Science and psychotherapy are learning every day about new diseases and disorders affecting the mind and body. A labeled disease simply means that this particular cluster of symptoms has had a name put to it; it doesn’t make that cluster of symptoms any more or less legitimate as a cluster of symptoms (such as yours) that don’t yet have their own label.

They are all disorders that afflict the body, and all deserve special care and treatment to help you take back control of your life and restore your inner peace.

Although there are tangible components involved that affect the body and daily life, eating disorders primarily begin and perpetuate in the mind. Talk therapy with a specially-trained counselor who is experienced in working with eating disorders has been proven to help.
